What is Subscriptions in SSRS? Explain about types of Subscriptions

A Subscription is  a standard request to have a report delivered at a specific time or in  response to an event and the format and delivery method that you have defined.
Subscription can use different mechanisms. By default SSRS includes File Share Delivery ans Simple Object Access Protocol(SOAP) Email Delivery method, and we can add custom delivery mechanisms. In addition that SSRS provides Null Delivery Channel, which means that report is not delivered anywhere but loading in the cache on a schedule. Creating the report only in the cache will improve the reporting performance for the end user.

For the Subscription we must specify the following information
  • Delivery Method
  • Rendering Type
  • Conditions for processing the subscriptions, either on a Schedule or when a snapshot of the report is updated on the report server.
  • Values for parameters if a report is parametrized.

Report Subscriptions are set for the reports through Report Manager. to define a subscription for a report. In a Report Manager, Open a Report, click the Properties Tab, and then click the Subscription Tab.
To Create a new Subscription click on New Subscription button show in the above page.  Each report delivery option contains a different set of properties to set. the below picture shows the properties of the windows file Share Delivery.

If you use the Share Delivery method, you must a Universal Naming Conversion (UNC) name of the share as well as the windows user credentials that SSRS will use to access the share.
If a file already exists in the share, you can specify that it should  or should not be overwritten or that file name should be incremented automatically when the new version of the file is added to the share.

Reporting Services includes an e-mail delivery extension that provides a way to e-mail a report to individual users or groups. The e-mail delivery extension is configured through the Reporting Services Configuration tool and by editing the Reporting Services configuration files.
